Operation Dynamo, 1940, 26 May - 3 June In May 1940 M.Y. Bounty joined an armada of 700 fishing boats, passenger ferries, car ferries, pleasure craft, sailing boats (even a Thames paddle steamer) known as the Dunkirk Little Ships. Their mission was to negotiate the shallow waters off Dunkirk and extract exhausted soldiers cornered by the German Panzer division and under relentless attack from the Luftwaffe.
They hoped to rescue up to 45,000 men that day - in actuality 338,226 men were saved and over 1100 of these by M.Y. Bounty, including Lord Gort, Commander-in-Chief of the battalion. During her final run, while carrying 150 troops, M.Y. Bounty fouled her propeller and so was towed triumphant back to Ramsgate.
After the war M.Y. Bounty had a succession of owners, but felt the effects of passing time. Now the subject of a complete re-fit with new masts, hydraulic steering, air conditioning and electronic equipment, her engines have been rebuilt, her frames and floors renewed and she has been rewired throughout. So M.Y. Bounty is once more set for cruising in home waters.
